Sunday Wrap-up: January 31 2016






Growing up I always loved to play board games and card games. Some of my favourite included: Trouble, Go Fish and Old Maid among others. I guess over the years I grew out of it. Or for some reason or another stopped playing any. Well since my man and I got together just over 5 years ago, we have both started to get back into it and our friends and family have jumped on board (no pun intended) as well. As I'm typing this I am inspired to write a separate blog post about board games, perhaps even some game reviews.

But back to the point of this topic.. This week a good friend introduced us to a board game I hadn't heard of before. It is called Catan.

The object of the game is to earn 10 points by building settlement, cities and roads using different resources. We had a lot of fun playing it and I'm looking forward to another round sometime soon.

After having a couple of not-so successful reading weeks, I was determined to make some progress this week.

I started reading a book I have had on Kindle for PC, for some time now. Unfortunately I decided to mark it DNF at 22%.

I was initially attracted to this book for the time travel aspect. Set in 1870's, I was eager to learn about what life was life in a Texas fort at that time. Knowing that this was also a romance I had hoped it  would be lighter in that area, focusing more on the adventure and setting.

Unfortunately this would not be the case. The way the time travel was approached was quick and gave little explanation. There was some very obvious foreshadowing and the romantic descriptions came across as very cheesy.

What may have been a very interesting time travel story, became very bogged down and overshadowed with romance. For these reasons I have decided not to continue on reading For All Time.

    I've heard of Catan but never played it. Sounds like a great game, it seems very popular. I used to go to a game convention (GenCon) and it was a paradise for all kinds of games, board games included.

    I loved Trouble as a kid! :) I think it was the popping LOL.

      Funny I had never heard of it until my friend brought it over, lol. GenCon sounds like it would be a lot of fun!
      Have you seen the newer version of Trouble? Definitely not as nice as the original (or at least the one I had growing up).

    Oh I heard about Settlers of Catan from The Big Bang Theory! That game is cool!!

      I've seen most of the episodes of that show, so I've probably seen the one where they mention Catan..but I can't remember it.

    I'm curious about The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper(lol)...and I love board games, but haven't played in a while. Played Monopoly a lot growing up...and Scrabble, which continued on and off over the years.

    The game of Catan sounds great and I bet it gets competitive. I usually find myself getting very much that way when I play games like that.

    My family really likes Settlers of Catan; my kids played it at other houses and I finally tried it out. There's a youtube channel that demonstrates board games (the series Tabletop on the geekandsundry channel) that has also lured us into new games; have you tried Pandemic?

    I read the Duggar book for my 50 state challenge and found it only adequately written but an interesting glimpse into a very different world view.

      I will have to check out that youtube channel. Thank you for mentioning it. I had never heard of it before.

      I agree, the Duggar girls aren't writers thats for sure, but I'm sure their intended audience would enjoy it.
